ELS & Colloidal ZVI Well Injection in LA County

Another successful injection project was recently completed by the Southern California Legacy Remediation Team at an industrial facility in Los Angeles County. The project involved the injection of multiple remediation amendments designed to enhance the treatment of chlorinated solvent impacts in groundwater while maintaining strict control over injection pressures and field conditions.

All reagent mixing and injection operations were completed using one of our custom self-contained mixing and pumping trailers. These trailers allow our field teams to safely and efficiently manage amendment mixing, quality control, and injection activities from a single mobile platform.

The project water source was an onsite private fire hydrant connected to the facility's fire suppression system. To ensure coordination with facility personnel, the Legacy team provided notifications at the start and end of each day's operations.

Maintaining anaerobic conditions was an important component of this injection program. To achieve this, all mix water was prepared onsite in alternating 1,000-gallon poly tanks. The water was conditioned prior to amendment mixing to minimize dissolved oxygen and create favorable conditions for the biological treatment process.

The primary amendment used for this project was Evonik ELS® (Emulsified Lecithin Substrate), a slow-release carbon source that promotes anaerobic biological activity and supports the breakdown of chlorinated solvents in groundwater.

The treatment mixture also included Evonik 5 µm Colloidal Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), which supports both abiotic and biological remediation processes. Its small particle size improves distribution in the treatment zone and helps accelerate contaminant degradation.

Each well was also bioaugmented with a Dehalococcoides microbial culture.
Injection was performed into multiple wells simultaneously, with approximately 5,200 gallons of amendment solution delivered per well at rates of 3-5 gpm while maintaining wellhead pressures below 5 psi.
The project was completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with our client's design objectives.
